HE MAKES A FAVOURABLE IMPRESSION.

(FKOir OCR STECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)

Lcotdon, December 11. The Agent-General and Mrs Perceval arrived in London on Saturday last by the Victoria, aad have taken up their residence pro ten:. - b the private hotel in Dβ Vere Gardensj South Kensington, where Bishop Selwyn is staying, and which is much a<Teoted by "smart" New Zealand visitors. Mr Perceval looked ia at Westminster Chambers on Monday and made the acquaintance of Mr Kennaway and the staff, but did nob take over office till Thursday. I called in the afternoon, and had a few minutes' chat, but could not stay long.aa there were other pressmen- waiting. First impressions incline mosb people I have talked to, to cordially approve the new Agent-General. He seems to possession by of savais, and the eminently requisite'faculby for a man in his position, of saying the right thing to the right person. Moreover, having been in England before, Mr Perceval'h perspectives are all right. He doesn't raise smiles (like another Agent I could name) by talking as if New Zealand were the major portionof the universe, or mouthing aboub " the greab colony which I have the honour to represent." Hie speech ab the Colonial Institute on Tuesday evening (of which more presently), was as remarkable for its modesty and good taste, as for its sound common sense. Mr Perceval, I may mention, received an invitation on the spot bo read a paper at the Institute some time this eeaaon, on New Zealand, bub decliued to commit himself. The subjecb (as he remarked fco me) is rather a " large order."
