A cold southerly wind is blowing for the opening day of tho Wellington Summer Meeting, and rain showers were falling in the morning, but there are signs of it clearing off. The attendance is large and in creasing. Cretonne, 7si 31b (McKeague) 1 Torpedo, 7st 121b (Reed) 2 Weka, 7*t 101b (Knight) ... 3 All started. Weka led for 6 furlongs, but, entering the straighf, Cretonne and Torpedo challenged her, and tho former, on the outside, gradually forged ahead, and woo by three-quarters of a length. Whisper, the favourite, was fourth. Time, lmin 35sec. Dividend, £13 ss. Hurdles. General Gordon, 9st 71b (Seacombe) ... 1 Rough, lOsb 61b (Rodmond) 2 Beggarman, l2st (Alexander) & All starred. Timothy, Rough and Oordon led for α-mile, with Matchless and Magpie hopelessly in the rear. After passing the stand, Timothy fell away beaten and General Gordon nnd Hough continued in the lead, the former winning by a length. Beggarman, who came faat at tho finish, was a, fair third.
