SWIMMING CLUB SPORTS.
The Auckland Swimming Ciub tuade a new and most successful departure from (.lie ordinary run of events in holding swimming contests at tho Albert-street Baths last"ovening.. Tbo building was lit. by means of lamps, and, with a, crowded assemblage of spectator?, presented ft very bright and animated appearance. Am en gs i> those present wove a larj;o number of ladies, and selections of music were provided by Hunter's Band (cornet, violin and piano). * The ofticors acciusr were Mr J Bak-jv, captain of the Swimming Club ; Mr J E. Cooko, sb-irfer; Messrs Uoiorrook and St. Ciair, judges ; and Mr L M. Myors, call steward, the affair was a great success, and with soma Siio-ht improvements in the arrangements eneiiasted by the experience now K ained, tbo'Club will, no doubt, und it advantageous to hold similar contests by gaslight in" the future. After tho third round fi'-sfc honours were awarded to E. Reynolds, while W. Dermor. and H. N. Cossar had a go over for second plane. The result was a tie. both competitors being; at their best City Haxdicav (103 yds).— This was the event of the evening. There wore no ie*s than 26 compotir.ors, divided into four heatH. The tirst heac was won by H. J. bauey (scratch), with A. Upton (13seo) close up ; time, lmin 3S-.'see. In the second heat, J. CassitJy (12=cc) lu-.d rather an easy win ; O. pvankham (Msec), second ; time, lmm STcec The third lieat was closely centered by IT.' Goldwacsr USsec) and J. Drummontl (17.<0e), and they finished in ■'■hat order. The tima £or this heat was not taken. The fourth heat was won by II Dacro (6occ) with H. Cossar (ISsec) second, and close up; time, lmin 36sec. These competitors aH came into the lnial heat, in which J. Felham also took part by mistake. A very tine race took place, Coa-niy.Dacreand Pelimm mairing a very editing race. Bailey pat in really excellent work, but was overweighted at tcra'-ch Co--sar was judged to be the ; hP V.' Pelham and Dacre tied, but the former, havintc no claim to contest the final the second place was given to Dacre. to be content with pushing their tubs in iront of them. F. J. Taylor won. Time, 15sec.
Boys' Rack (under 15), 72yds.—Three boys started, and rnado a very close race, the result being :— J. N. Phillips (2sec), 1; P. Bailey (7sec), 2 ; hi. C. Cossar (scratch),
36yds Dash.—H. J. Bailey and M. Scott were the only competitors. Their task consisted of a dive and a spurt over one length of the bath. Bailey won rather easily, Scott taking a bad course. Time, 23sec.
Corfu Dive,—This evenb was contested by four nsen. The task set was to dive from the platform and ris& inside a ' floating life-buoy. After many failures, W. Denison was successful, C. W. Dalton making the next best attempt.
Siamese Race.—Two couples competed, and victory foil to tho lot oE H. Goldwater and J. R. Hooper. Their opponents were doings very well, xvhen they became unbound, aud had to discontinue.
Polo Match.—A water-polo match between City and North Shore teams brought tho programme of events to a conclusion. It excited a good deal of amusement, the result being a drawn game. An exhibition of fancy swimming by Professor Pannell brought tho. sports to an end.
