Edward Downing, aerated water manu facturer, bo-day filed a petition to be ad judged a bankrupt.
Owing to the enlargement of the Birkenhead borough, a special election of a Mayor and Council has become necessary. Yesterday nominations were received for the vacant seats. Mr C. E. Button, the retiring mayor, was proposed and duly elected. Messrs E. J. White, R. J. Hardy, B. T. Hawkins, H. Jones, J. G. Kay, A. F. Porter and W. Thompson were nominated as Councillors, bub as only six are required an election will be necessary. The poll will take place on Monday next between the houra ot 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Ebenezer C Earle, grocer, of Onehnnga, in a sworn statement regarding his bankruptcy made to the Official Assignee, states thab his debts, all unsecured, amount to £647 15s lOd, and assets, as follows: — Stock, £113 ; book debbs, £225 12s 6d ; cash in hand and wibh trustees, £21 12s lOd; total £369 lis 6d; leaving a deficiency of £279 10s 6d. The bankrupt borrowed £200 with which to start business and being unable to.pay that amount was sued. This led up to his filing. -'--
