SECONDARY SCHOOLS CONFERENCE.

(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION,)

Wellington, this day. At the Secondary Schools Conference, Mr Andrews, of Wanganui, brought forward a scheme providing for a secondary schools examination, and moved " That a Committee be appointed to go into details." This was lost, after considerable" discussion, by six to five, as also was a scheme brought forward by Mr Mayne, of Timaru, providing for examination- of schools by tho University Senate. •< '■' The Conference unanimously resolved to recommend (a) " That the privilege already granted to those who have served as pupil teachers and to those who have attended training college for the prescribed time of counting pass in junior scholarshipexamination towards obtaining of class D teacher's certificate, even though they had not attained the age of 19 years ac the time of passing the examination, should be extended to pupils of secondary schools ; (b\ that ' pass-with-credit' in junior scholarship examination should be recognised a 8 equivalent for all purposes to a pass in senior Civil Service examinations.

Mrßevan Brown called attoution to the fact that a matriculated student always received a paper from ■ the Registrar which he was asked to sign, and the signing of which debarred him from subsequently competing for the junior scholarship. The speaker thought that the disqualification should be distinctly stated on this paper. One of his own pupils had inadver' tently signed this paper, and had thus been prevented from entering tho higher examination, although he intended to bo two years longer at school. It was unanimously resolved to try to get this state of things altered. Mr Bevan Brown was elected president) and Mr Walton secretary for the ensuing seasoti, and the Standing Committee was elected consisting of the president elect, secretary, Rev. Bare and Harkness. The time and place for next meeting was left to this committee, though a recommeadation was made that it should be at either Wellington or Christchurch about January 21st, 1895. This closed proceedings.
