CHESS CONGRESS.

The third day's play in connection with the chess championship of Xew Zealand was Commenced this morning at Robsori's Rooms, Queen-street. Yesterday's ploj' ended last night in a draw and a win. The jratne between Mr Seideberg and Mr Bakevroll was declared a draw, after 42 men-ess each having a rook, a knight, and .six pawns. In the game between Air Malcolm and Mr Trimble each player had at the ?>7th move three rooks and a pawn, and they decided to declare a draw. Mr Jowifcfc wen his game with Mr Ashton, after 65 moves, the struggle being a bard one. Tho following players met to-day, the first-mentioned having the move : — Malcolm •■ v. Bakowoll. Mr Bakev;eil elected to defend by playing the French defence. Hi.3 sixth move was very weak, viz., P. to K.B. 3, of which Mr Malcolm took the advantage, and Closely pressed him until the3lstmove, when instead of moving , to R 8, ho moved Knb. to X 3, of which -oversight-Mr Bnkewell took full advaniaye, and secured a draw. AVhile occupied lhr lOmin, and Black 3hr 20min.

In tho waoae between Messrs Seideberg and Barnes the ottered Mr Barnes the Evans Gambit, which'was declined. Eighteen moves have been made on each side, and at half-past; two this afternoon tho. game appeared fairly even.
