CHESS CONGRESS.
The New Zealand Chess Congress, play in which will commence here en Monday, promises to boas successful as tho Congress hold in Wellington during the last Christmas and New Yoar holidays. These annual meetings are the only occasions on which the strongest players of the various chess clubs in "the colony have an opportunity of oncountering each other in the royal game. It would be a great advantage to chessplayers if the best players in the colony could meet moro frequently; for skirmishing wich inferior players only tends to weaken the stronger player. The Congress will be held in Robson's Rooms, and will last -about a fortnight. The public aro invited to wionoss the play. The competitors ara as , follows :•-Messrs A. Ashton, Jowitt, Trimble, Malcolm, selected from the ditlerent clubs in Auckland ; R. J. Barnes, the present-champion (Wellington Working Men's Club), A. J. Littlejohn and Bakewell (Wellington Chess Club), H. Hookham (Christchurch), F. Siedeberg, junr. (Dunedin). It U not certain whether Mr Thomas Sexton, of Aohliur3t, who is well-known as being an excellent problem-composer will be able to compete. Mr Siedeberg is at present the only one of the visiting players who has arrived, but the others aro expected to arrive on Sunday evening or Monday morning. This is the first time that Auckland has held a chess congress.
