LIGHTING THE CITY.
The question of lighting the city came before the Council laab evening, when the following report was submitted by the Streets Commibtee:— lie Additional Gas Lamps. — " Your Committee report that they met a deputation of the Chairman and directors of the Gas Company, and; 1. That the Company a(*rea on condition of erecting 50 lamps in the city, and 15 of extra power in Queenstreet, to charge for each ordinary lamp £3 12a 6d, and £4 7a for Queenstreet lamps. 2. That for the Queenstreet lamps it is understood for the effective placing of these the city may avail themselves of the Gas Company's experts ; the lamps to bo placed from Quay-street to Wakefield-street, and the ordinary lamps now in use to be removed. For these 15 lamps the Committee recommend a special form of lamp post suitable to the requirements of the new light and the surroundings of the sbreob. (3) Your Committee recommend that the lamps be erected as follows :—North Ward, 6 ; South Ward, 12 ; Bast Ward, 6 ; Ponsonby 12 ; Karangahape Ward, 10.; Grafton Ward, 4; and that it be remitted to the ward members to recommend■ where they shall be placed." —On the motion of the chairman, Cr. Crowther, the report was adopted.—Cr. Garratt mentioned that lamps were often turned out lon£ before the hour stipulated, when there was no moon. It was agreed to write to the Gas Company calling attention to that fact.
