CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held lust night, when there were prege nt: Mr Upton (Mayor), Crs. Tronwith, (Jrsy, Crowther, Farrell, Julian, Holland, iuks, Dignan, Swales, Cooper, Wright, layer, Howson, Pateraon, Garratt, Warren, and Dr. Walkor. Advertising on Telegraph Posts.—On the motion of tho Mayor it was resolved that a telegram be sent to the Governmenb protesting against advertising upon telegraph posts. The Mayor said he could not gee why the Government should, use tho streets of tho Council for advertising purposes. Auctioneer's License.—William Ward Eater wrote applying for an auctioneer's license- —The application was granted. Chorion's Monument.—Mr W. H. Churson of the late Rev. J. F. Churton, tfl'ote suggesting thab as St. PauPa Church J-Jfas to bo re-ereefced on the old site, it would bo fibbing for the Council to replace tlie monument dedicated by the citizens of of Auckland to tho memory of his father, '£he \vrit6r suggested that the monument should either bo re-erected on the old site, JEtnily Place, or else in one of the City reserves. —Tho letter was referred to the Parks Committee to repovb upon, Watek Extension.-— Messrs Macklow Bros, wrote applying to have the water mains oxtended to their new saw mills in Mechanics' Bay.—The Engineer reported thab the total cost of extension would be £29. lb was resolved that tho work bo dono as requested. X'attesox-street. — A letter was received on behalf of tho leaseholders in Patteson-street, praying thab it might be watered during tho summer months.—The Engineer reported thab if tho present hot weabher continued there would be no fresh water to use one month hence.—Cr. Farrell spoke Strongly in favour of crranting the request.—Dr. Walker supported the application, arid said that ib was something disgusting in Patteson-street when a wind was blowing:.—Crs. Crowther and Layer considered chat there were other parts of the city that were more dusty.—Cr. Cooper said that the dust was verybad, as much of it was carted fiom dirty placee like City East.—The Mayor said that ab the Springs water was still going to waste. He believed the dust was a tremendous nuisance, and as long as they had plenty of water it would be well to use the hydrants.—This suggestion was agreed to. Albert-street Baths.—Tho Secretary of the Auckland Swimming Club wrote inquiring whether the Council was prepared to light the baths in order that swimming competitions might be held at uighfc. The Club was prepared to rent the baths ab least one night per week.—The letter was referred to the "Baths Committee. Drain Age. —P. Darby wrote drawing attention to the state of the drainage in Newstreet. He offered to contribute £10 if the work was carried up along St. Francis de Sales and Lundon-streets.—The Engineer reported thab the cost would be £65.—The letter was referred to the Streets Committee. G. J. Bosworth wrote calling attention to tho drainage at the corner of Winchester and Gutidry-streets. He said owing to houses not being drained, sewage stagnated and caused a nuisance.—lt was reBolved that the matter be attended to. Lamp.— J. A. Tole wrote asking thab a lamp should be erected ab the junction of O'Neill-street and Ponsonby Road—The letter was referred to the ward members. King Terrace.— H. W. Power wrote calling attention to the dangerous state of this street. He asked thab it should bo properly made.—The City Engineer reported that ho had attended to the matter. —The letter was referred to the Streets Committee. Permit.—Dr. Lewis wrote applying for a permit to make additions to his residence, Symonds-streeb. — Tho application was granted.—Ed. Bartley wrote for a permit to effect certain alterations in Sharland's residence, in O'Rorke-street. The application was granted.—R. M. Watt wrote asking lor a permit to shingle the extension to Captain Greenwood's residence. This.was granted. Eden Crescent.—H. Fletcher wrote asking thab the footpath in this street near the old Club be attended to. —The Engineer reported this would be done shortly.—A letter was ordered to be sent to Mr Fletcher notifying him accordingly. Art Gallery Plans.—W. J- Napier wrote on behalf of E,. Jenkinson re his designs for the annexe to the Art Gallery. Ib was to bho effect thab his client had sustained considerable loss in _ consequence of the breach of conditions of the competition by the Council's represnntatives having opened the envelope containing the specifications; Mr Napier asked what compensation the Council proposed to offer him for loss and trouble Sustained.—The Mayor moved that a letter be Bent to Mr Napier telling him thab Mr Jenkinson had signed the particulars to the plan.—This was agreed to. Petition*.—Cr. Luke presented a petition praying thab the salt water be turned into the Albert-street Baths. This was referred to the Baths Committee.—Cr. Layer presented a petition praying that attention be paid to the drainage in Park Avenue, as at present the sewage was not satisfactorily carried otK The petition was referred to the Streets Committee. — Cr. Walker presented a petition from the residents of Paget-street and Ponsonby Road asking that attention be paid to certain defective drains, which were causing sickness. The petition was referred to the Streets Committee. Cr. Swale 3 presented a petition from 111 residents in Ponsonby asking that a safe approach be made to the beach at tho foot of St. Mary's lload, by forming a footpath on the west side. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. E-iiitjy PlaCe Land.—The Mayor moved with regard to Mr Wynyard's request to know the price for an allotment of land near the site of Sb. Paul's Church, thab the applicant be informed that the allotment would be sold at cost price, £4,000, with interest at 5 per cent.—This was agreed to. Annual Contracts.—lt was decided that tenders be invited for the annual contracts, also thab alternate tenders be invited for carting for one or three years. Filter Beds.—Tho Engineer was authorised to call for tenders for the supply of 150 yds of Bhingie for the filter bed 3ab the Western Springs., Art Gallbrv Tenders. —The Mayor notified that he had empowered the architect to extend tho time for tenders for tho annexe to tho Art Gallery by one Week.—lb was agreed to refer the tenders to the Legal Committee together with the M trustees, and Councillors Julian, Farrell and Lawer, the Committee to have power to act, bub not to allow the price to exceed tho amount stipulated. Meeting of Cooxcil.—As the iasb meeting of tho Council this year • would ordinarally fall on Christmas Eve, ib was decided to alter the date to the 2i!nd instead of the 24th.
