YESTERDAY'S RACING AT FLEMINGTON.

MALVOLIQ WINS THE CUP. j STRATHMORE GETS BLOCKED. (BY. CABLE.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, last night. Beautiful weather was experienced for the second day's racing of tho V.R.C. Spring Meeting. His Excellency the Earl find Countess of Hopetoun, the Earl and Countess of Jersey, and the Earl and Countess of Kintore, with their suites, were again present. There was an immense assemblage on the stand and lawn, and the hill was crammed. There was a large gathering of spectators on the Footscray side of "the salt-water river, whilst the flat was covered with tens of thousands. The ring started auspiciously, as Kimberley, the winner of the Hurdle Race, was completely ignored, except by tho stable, who threw in for a fair stake. The issue was never in doubt, albeit a mile from home Bonnie Doon closed on the leader, but fell, as alao did Leroy, Studenb, and Bella during the race. In the Melbourne Cup Kedfearn rode a very patient race on Malvolio ; never making his effort until within tho half distance, when he came with one brilliant run. Pigeontoe had a splendid position passing the stand. Rounding the river turn, towards the abattoirs, Strathmore gofc on to the rails, and had extreme difficulty in releasing himself from his blocked-in position ; when he did get out he came very fast, and finished like a bull-dog. During the Cup contest Cobham foil, and broughb down Megaphone, G'Naroo, and Prelude. Cobham and Ramaga (rider of Megaphone) sustaining injuries. As soon as the colours could be plainly discerned ib was seen that Annesley was in front, with Tanfcallon close up, and after him Paris. Carringbon, Malvolio, Yarran, and Correze. In front of the stand, Prelude led Paris by half a length, whilst Whimberel was third, Aster, Strathmore and Pigeontoe following in that order. Along: by the river the order was : Prelude, Strathmore, and Sir William, after whom came Cob ham, with Malvolio, Correze, and Pigeontoe the mosb prominent of the others. Round by the bridge Strathmore moved up, while at the abattoirs Prelude cried enough and fell back beaten, her place being taken by Sir William, whilst Cobham, who was beginning to show out prominently, came down, Megaphone, G'Naroo, and Prelude falling over . him. Coming down towards the home turn, Highborn, Oxide, and Correze became conspicuous, while Strathmore had got into a bad position, being jammed on the rails. Oxide led into the straight from Highborn, who was followed by Sir William, Malvolio.Forty Winks, and Whimberel, in a clustei , , with Strathmore making strenuous efforts to get out. When he did manage to get clear ib was too late, as Redfearn on Malvolio, timing the horse's run beautifully, brought him up in the last half-furlong, and defeated Sir William by three-quarters of a length, Strathmoro only a nack behind the labter.
