THE NORTHERN STAR.
PUT BACK LEAKY
The locally-owned wooden barque Northern Star, 327 tons, Captain G. S. Norris, which left here for Nelson last weak, laden with general cargo, put back into port late last night in a leaky condition, and somewhat strained, after a rather xough experience on, the coast. She is a Prince Edward Islandbuilt vessel, having been constructed there 16 years ago, and she was recently purchased here by Captain Norris, for tho intercolonial trade.
The Northern Star left here on the 15th instant with a full cargo of bricks, tiles, cement, and other cargo for Nelson, and beat out against a strong N.E. breeze, bringing up under the Kawau on the 16th for a change of wind. She got under weigh again next day for the north-about passage round the WestCoast, and had afair S.S.W. breeze to the Hen and Chickens rocks, when the wind veered round to the north and increased to a strong gale on the IBbh instant (Sunday last). The vessel laboured heavily in the high sea running, her decks being constantly flooded, and she began to make water. All hands were set at the pumps to keep the ship clear of water, and pumping was continued until arrival in port again." For the safety of the ship it was found necessaiy to jettison 4,000 or 5,000 bricks. Captain Norns bore up for Whangarei Heads for shelter, and lefb there yesterday for Aucfcland to re-stow the cargo and efiect repairs. The barque strained very heavily at sea, owing to too much dead-weight being stowed in her bottom. She will need to be discharged and re-loaded to have sundry repairs effected before sailing again.
