CITY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting , of the above body was held lasb night. Present: —The Mayor (Mr J. H. Upton), Crs. Paterson, Hewson, Layer, Wright, Cooper, Swales, Dignan, Luks, Atkin, Holland, Crowther, Grey, Julian, Farrell, Trenwith, Garratt, and Warren. Resignation.— Mr J. M. Lennox wrote forwarding his resignation as member of the South Ward, and also as one of tho Sinking Fund Commissioners. The resignation was accepted, and the Council decided to increase tho number of members on the Sinking Fund Commission, Crs. Atkin, Cooper, and Dignan being appointed. Mechanics' Bay Seweb.—TheTown Clerk of Parnell wrote forwarding the following resolution :—" That the Auckland City Council be thanked for p!an and estimate of prooosed drainage work, also to inform them "that this Council is willing to join them in asking the Government to contribute towards the co3t of the said work and to state the amount they are prepared to contribute." —The Council agreed to grant the request.
Manning-stkeet.—The clerk to the Eden Terrace Road Board wrote offering £80 contribution towards tho formation of Manning-street, provided the Council construcb the culverb complete with all nocessary inlets, and also form and complete the thoroughfare, leaving on one side tho stone and material of present bridge for the benefit of the Road Board.—The lotter was referred to the ward members to report. Patronage.—Mrs A. W. Anderson wrote asking the patronage of the Council on tho occasion of her benefit performance to take place in tho City Hall on the 14th of December.—The letter was received.
Eden-street. —The residents wrote asking that the western footpath should be tarred and sanded.—lt was resolved to grant the request. Claim .for Compensation.—Messrs Devore and Cooper wrote on behalf of Mrs K. Churches asking the Council for compensation for injuries sustained in consequence of her cart going over the embankment on the ri3e from Customs to Princesstreet. —Mr W. J. Nnpier also wrote en behalf of William Dunn, claiming £75 153 as damages sustained through the fall of his wife, horse and cart over a'precipice on the road from Customs-street to Princesstreet, which precipice was insufficiently guarded.—Both the letters were referred to the Legal Committee. Drainage.—Mr E. M. Heyland wrote calling attention to a nuisance existing in Graf ton Road, owing to the want ot a main drain.—Cr. Layer said this would bo dealt with in the ward members' report.
Asphalting. —Messrs Knight and Fowler, having finished their contract, wrote asking if there was any more asphalting to be done or top-dressing.—The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.
Donation to Art Gallery.—Francis R. Webb wrote'offering an oil painting of Tokatea Goldfield, executed by Mr E. A. Gifford, for the Art Gallery. The Mayor moved that the gift be accepted. Ho mentioned that Mr Gifford was an artist of well-known ability. His Worship also said it was pleasant to receive such a gift, accompanied by such a courteous expression of good feeling, by one who had lived for some yeare in our midst.—The motion was adopted.
petition was presented by Cr. Swales asking , that the footpath in Argyle-sbreeb be formed.—The petition was received, and referred to the Streets Committee.
I Streets Committee.—The Streets Committee recommended as follows :—Letter from Secretary Knights of Labour re permit for signboard, Grey-street: Thab permit be granted subject to the Engineer's approval. iJetter from Edward Cash re permit for addition to building : That permit be granted. Letter from Paterson and Co. suggesting mutual agreement for maintenance by Council of streets on line of tramway : That proposal be declined. Memo, from Engineer re fencing reservoir reserve, Mount Eden Read: That work be done.—The report was adopted.
Mackelvie Gallery,—The following report was submitted by the Legal Committee, relative to the designs received for the annexe to the Art Gallery :—Seven received : —"Rex," "Paradigm," "Renaissance," " Experto Grede," "Red Cross," "Local Industry," and "Southern Cross" designs were opened, and after mature consideration and inspection of each design j our Committee recommend that the design signed "Paradigm," Mr Charles Arnold, be accepted.—On the motion of the Mayor the report was adopted.—Cr. Garratt remarked that the design was not in keeping with the rest of the building ; it made it a piece of patchwork.—On the motion of Cr. Layer the architecb was instructed to propare working plans and submit at the next
meeting. ' 3 Additions to Library.—The Advisory Committee reported the selection of books to the value of about £180, and recommended that same be ordered. —It was adopted. Western Springs Mill.—The Finance Committeo reported re the Engineer's memo, with reference to the Western Springs Mill, " That the engine and plant be brought into town for sale, and that the building and sheds be offered for sale by auction for removal."I—This1 —This was.agreed to.
Drainage in Grafton Ward. — The Grafton Ward members reported re tenders for drainage Carlton Gore and Grafton Roads : ""Tho Ward members recommend 'that the lowest tender be accepted, that of Thomas Mulvahill, price £210 12s Bd." —The report was adopted.
Tenders.—Tho following tenders were received for a dray :—James Boyle, £18 10s; J. Patorson, £17 ss; T. Wilkinson, £17 10s ; James Mackie, £15 ; and H. L. Smith, £16 15s. —Mr Mackie's tender was accepted. .
Cadet Wanted.—An application was received from the Treasurer, Mr Payne, asking for a cadet in his office. —The matter was referred to the Finance Committeo.
Domain Board.—The Cricket Ground Committee reported with regard to a letter from Charles Layer re price of practice wickets, " That clubs rising in status from Second Junior to First Junior shall have a practice wicket for £2 10s.—This was agreed to. It was also decided to repair tho cottage.
