PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.
NO MONEY FOR AUCKLAND. I DIVERSION FOR WHANGAEBI TO ! HIKURANGI LINE. JNO VOTE FOR HELENSVILLE LINE. (BY TELEGRAPH.—OWS REPORTER. ) "Wellington, this day. S The Works Statement will be delivered this J evening, The following Auckland works will be proposed :— I Karno-Kavrakawa Railway. This has cost something like £90,000. Ifa is proposed to extend the line from Kamo to Hikurangi. The vote for this purpose is to be obtained from the money allocated to the doubling oi Auckland-Penrose line. The Minister for Works calculates that the sale of timber on the Puhipuhi Block by public competition will pay for the construction of the line apart from the value of the Hikurangi coal deposits. It is not proposed to proceed with the Helensville lino northwards at present. The Grahamstown-To Aroha Hue will be J completed from To Aroha to Paeroa. \ On the North Island Trunk Railway a section will be let) at Auckland end as soon as the Native Minister is satisfied this will nob interfere with land purchases there. On the Rotorua line another section will bo completed to touch the main road. Road votes will include small sums to open Puhipnhi; for the Thames-Coromandel road, Coromandel to Kuaotunu, Kuaotunu to Mercury Bay; also forroadain Ohinernuri county, Waitawhiti Gorge road, Karaugahake to Waihi, Furiri "to Tairua, Tiki to Mahikarau. It is stated that six or seven miles of extension of the Kaihu Valley Railway will open up a large tract of timber country, but nothing is proposed to bo done at present. ■ For the villago settlements it is proposed to vote £16,949 to cover the estimated liability for further advances which the s&ttlers can claim and for local roads. Provision is also made for opening , roads to give access .to the ITorth Island Main Trunk Railway. For roads to the goldfields, the House will be asked to vote £30,000 to complete works now in progress throughout the colony, and granting of assistance to local bodies. Eight thousand pounds is asked for waterworks on goldfields, a.nd provision is also made for the extension of the Auckland Lunatic Asylum. ' For the Otago Central it is proposed to appropriate £30,000 to extend the line from Middlemarch towards Hyde.
