THE SCHOONER CLANSMAN.
v A STORMY VOYAGE.
This morning the locally-owned topsail schooner Clansman. 157 tons, Captain J. G, Bushell, arrived in porb from her Island trip down to Rarotonga (Hervey group), bringing in a full and valuable cargo of copra, cotton, cotton seed, limejuice, and a deckload of oranges. She was berthed at the Queen-6treefc Wharf this afternoon. She left here about three months ago for Rarotonga with a full general cargo, and made the run down in 21 days, anchoring in Avarua Harbour on the 9do ult. She did nob cruise round the Hervey Group, but loaded up afa Barotonga for Auckland, and came straight back. Her return voyage laetod 20 days, during which she fell in with some very stormy weather, bub sustained no damage of any account. When 80 miles out from Rarotonga she encountered strong S.W. winds and heavy eea, and when a week out met with a terribly severe S.S. W. galo with tremendous •eas. On the 7th inst.ahe was hove-to in the gale, which was blowing with hurricane force, terrific squalls sweeping down on the schooner and lasting some time. On the 12th inst. the glase fell to 29-30, and the wind veered round to the S.E., blowing a heavy gale for some time, with a nasty high cross sea. She had to be hove-to under close-reefed foresail and fore-staysail, and rode out the gale safely, though a groat sea was shipped, which flooded the cabin and knocked ofi the top of the skylight. Off the coast she had heavy S.E". winds. She conies into port in excellent order.
