NURSES' DIRECTORY.
The Auckland Medical Association has established a directory for nurses following their vocation in this city. There has hitherto been no organisation in connection with those in Auckland who make sick nursing their profession : and as the services of a nurse are often sought in an emergency, valuable time is frequently lo3t ere one is obtained. Thia difficulty has, of course, been most apparent to medical men, and our Medical Association is seeking to provide a means of remedying the w*;*;(\ In connection with the nurses' directory, the names of nurses dosiring to be placed on the register are entered along with their qualifications as to training, etc., and the fees they expect in the various branches of nursing work. When a nurse enters on an engagement or leaves ono she is required to send word to the Rfegisbrar, that he may be aware of who is open for engagement, and when a nurse is no longer required at any ease a schedule asking for information as to her efficiciency, etc., is sent to the medical man under whom she has been nursing and also to the the house. While this will serve to aid the nurses in aiming at a high standard of efficiency, it will also be a means ot avoiding and explaining many of the small misunderstandings which occasionally arise between the best of nurses aad those for whom they nurse. Rules have been drawn up and printed to define the relation of the nurses to the directory, and to point out what is expected of a nurse, andalso what is expectedfor her ab tho hands of those for whom she ia nursing. While the interests of the sick are first considered, those of tho nurse arc by no means neglected. Such a scheme, however, cannot be carried out without expense, nnd while the Medical Association has resolved to bear tho heavy initial expenditure, it ia hoped to make tho direcbory self-supporbing by the fees paid by those securing , nurses through ib. Each nurse is expected to pay a small annual fco for registration, and those obtaining nurses a registry fee of half-a-crown. Mr Crawford, chemist, Karangahape Road, has undertaken the duties of Registrar, and from the beginning of this month has been able to supply nurses for the various branches of sick nursing. Dr. Roberton is acting as Secretary of the Nurses' Directory, and will be glad to supply information regarding it to nurses or others.
