A SALUTING BATTERY.
Major Goring, officer in charge of the Auckland Permanent Artillery, has written to the Harbour Board requesting permission to fence oft a portion of ground 100 ft by 40ft on the reclaimed land near the Calliope Dock, in order to mount a battery of from four to six smooth-bore guns, for use as a saluting battery, the present position of the saluting battery on Mount) Victoria being unsuitable in his opinion, Hβ instances thefacb that the officers of the French warship Champlain, when entering , the harbour recently from Tahiti, and saluting the British flag, were not aware of the facb that their compliment was at once returned by the Permanent Artillery from Mount) Victoria until Captain Grenfell, of H.M.B. Cordelia, sent an officer to acquaint them of the fact. This was owing to a westerly breeze blowing.
