CORRESPONDENCE.
A FROTH FEDERATION,
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The more the present attempt to form a so-called federation in tho boot manufacturing trade of the colony is looked into, the more utterly frothy in its character does it appear. Practically ib is a childish idea; it lacks sound reason. Hero are a few causes which -render such a union impossible :—(1) Every master claims the freedom to work his own businees on his own particular system, and assuredly he himself is ever the beet judge in such. (2) Tho climate of this colony differs as widely as does Scotland and France. (3) Climate is a considerable regulator in the matter of the production of leather. (4) Climate is an important factor in the time of duration of leather, its wear and tear. (5) The climate and other circumstances natural to the northern portion of the colony are more favourable to a more ready and cheaper production of material. (6) The temperature in general of the North does not tell as severely in tho wear of books aa does that of the South. (7) Everywhere, more or lesa, a cheaper article often suit* the trade, when the dearer and better would not do so. May it be hoped that the present) unnecessary condition of idleness of many young men in this city may, with good commonsense prevailing, spaedily cease, and all shortly be united in the great and honourable army of fche industrious.—Yours, etc., N.Z.
