THE PORTUGUESE TROUBLE.
ENGLAND'S STAND.
London , , April 23. In the House of Lords to-day the Marquis of Salisbury announced that the Portuguese Government had ordered the removal of every obstacle interfering with the free navigation of the Pungwe River and the passage into the interior, but he said that the demeanour of the Portuguese officials in Mashonaland was so unsatisfactory that three British warships had been ordered to rendezvous off the mouth of the river to protect British interests. The Premier further stated that a Consular agent had been sent to Mashonaland to see that the terms of the modus vivendi were respected.
It is now expected that the question of further reparation by Portugal will be reserved for the present.
In the House of Lords the Marquis of Salisbury, in referring to the promises made to Portugal with regard to Mashonaland, said that Portuguese promises were seldom fulfilled. ' . April 24. The Marquis of Salisbury has reived a reassuring report respecting the Portuguese in Mashonaland.
