PAID AUDITORS.

(To bhe Editor.)

Sir,—Will you allow me space for a worol in reply to the comments of Messrs J. Thornes and W. Gill on tho above subject. In moving absolution ab the Orphan Home meeting to the effect that an auditor bo appointed ab a quarterly fee of two guineas, I gave due consideration to bwo circumsbances — first, that I was, by intimate knowledge of my subject, able to judge of the amount of work involved; second, that I was dealing with a purely charitable institution. '■'.. < • ' I am not- one to undervalue the importance' of the avocation of accountant and auditor; indeed, I would go further and say .bat I should like to see us formed into an association, and bur omployment rendered compuleory by law as regards certain classes of companies, bub until that time comes some latitudo must be given to individual, judgment. As a professional accountant and auditor, I think the thanks of the profession—for so I would call ib—are due; to the subscribers of the Orphan Home for setting the example bo having a paid periodical audit of:religious or semi-religiouft associations, in addition to paying for the continuous service, of an accounbanb to keep the books, and I, think it a .mistake to frighten away a new class of clients by reference to Melbourne charges. We might commence on a lower scale than a charge of ono guinea for driving, say from Mr Jonas' office, Colonial Bank Buildings, to tho Orphan Home office ab Mr Walker's, in Forb-street.—l am, etc., W. 11. OiirjuTON. ' .' Star Chambers, 21st April, 1091.
