Drunkenness. — William Lestrange. was fiued 10a or 24 hours in default for having been drunk yesterday. Theft and Assault.—Edward Coughlan was charged with having been drunk yesterday and pleaded guilty. Ho was further charged with having assaulted John Hayes, and pleaded not guilty. He said he was drunk and did nob know anything about ib. — Evidence was givian by complainanb and his son, showing bhab the assault was utterly unprovoked.—-Con-stable Mathison deposed to arresting the accused.—-The same prisoner was further charged with having on tho 18th of April stolen 7s 6d belonging to John Hayes. —He pleaded not guilty. — John Hayes deposed that he was proprietor of a shooting gallery in Queen-street. On the day in question he changed a sovereign aud left 15s in silver on the desk. Witness put this money in his pocket, bub there was a hole in ib and the silver went through to the floor. Accused stepped forward and picked some money up and handed ib to witness, who saw that bhere was only a few shillings. Accused then made for the door, but witness caught him and found three half-crowns in his hand. Witness gave bim into custody.—Percy Hayes gave corroborative evidence.—The accused did not make any statement in defence.—Dr. Giles fined prisoner 5s for, drunkenness, or 24 hours' in default, -20s or seven days for the assault, and sentenced him to one month's hard, labour ..for the.
