THE GREAT SEA SERPENTYARN.

(To tho Editor.)

Sir, —Having road your interesting paragraph on the above subject in Saturday's issue, will you permit me to say, in as few words as possible, what I know of Miss Lovcll. To begin with, tho term " enterprising sohoolma'am " falls quite flab when applied to this lady. She is retiring to a degiee almost morbid, and ib is only her lovo of science (certainly not of notoriety) which has caused her to communicate the account of this strange creatine. A lady by birth and education, she has resided now for many years at Sandy Cape on Eraser Island, only at rare intervals visiting the mainland for a few days. In addition to her official duties she is the kindest of friends and counsellors bo the white and black population around hor, especially so to the latter, who love her dearly. Sho is a rare naturalist, and her holidays and spare time are generally either in tho forest or along the shores of Eraser Island. Accompanied only by a black gin or two, to carry provisions, blankots, specimens, etc., she will spend a week at a time in these expeditions, returning with many rare specimens and valuable observations. The curator of the Brisbane Museum, as well as some of the departments of the Queensland Government, are indebted to her for much valuable information, and she is justly considered a most reliable authority. In justice to Miss Lovell, who is much respected by all who have the honour of her acquaintance, I have ventured to send you these few lines.—l am, etc.,. A GjUEENSLANDER.
