THE BOOTMAKERS' STRIKE.

We are glad to learn that the efforts of Mr J. ->i. Shera have been successful in bringing about an agreement on the part of the Operativo Bootmakers to meot the employees at a conference over outstanding trade dilierenees. The reply from the manufacturers is not yet to hand, but no doubt they will fall in with the proposal. Wo sincerely trust that the outcome will be an amicable settlement of differences, and that the boot factories will onoc more become the centres of active industry. Air Shera. received the following letter to-day : — Auckland Operative Bootmakers' Union, April 66h, iS9I.

J. M. Shera, Esq. Dear sir,—ln reply to yours of the 3rd, at a meeting of the Strike Committee held this day it was decided to accede to your suggestion re conference of nine. Will you, if convenient, suggest Wednesday as the day to the other aide ? Tho Union will appoint their three representatives at a special meeting to be held tomorrow (Tuesday).—lam, etc., \V. L. Hakdixo, Secretary. Tho following: letter has been received by, Mr Shera from the Secretary of tho Auckland Employers' Association : "J. M. Shern, Esq. : Dear Sir, —I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter suggesting; that a conference be held between three member.; of the Boot Manufacturers' Association nnri three of the Operatives' Union, who shall e'eob three others to discuss tiie present strike in the Auckland boot trado. At the same time I also received from the President of the Operative BoottiKtkors' Union, a letter declining arbitration or conciliation from nny source, but tho letters will bo laid before my executive to-morrow, nnd I hope that measures for a settlement will be devised in the interests not only of the trade, but of the public too. —I have, etc., " i< , .
