THE GOVERNMENT GIVE WAY.

TIME TO BE.SHORTENED.

Wellington, this day, 3 p.m. The Government have reconsidered the question of shortening the time of delivery by the, San Francisco Mail Service, and have resolved to inaugurate the new service with the nexb out-going steamer—the Mariposa. The next mail, however, will leave Auckland on Saturday the 28th, instead of Monday the 23rd; the mails this month will thus be five days later instead of two days earlier in despatch from Auckland. The reason for this change is to divide the deliveries between the San Francisco and Direct services more equally. The alteration will of course enable the Homeward mails to catch the fast Atlantic steamers ab New York, upon which the Shortening of the time mainly depends. Mr J. Young, secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, received the following telegram to-day from Hon. J. D. Cadman re mail service. Hon. Mr Ballance wired under misapprehension. The arrangement is bhat the Mariposa leaves Auckland Saturday 28th instead of Monday 23rd. [The foregoing telegrams were received after our fourth page, containing a leading article on this subject had been stereotyped. The decision now arrived at materially alters the situation. Nevertheless it will still be necessary for the Chamber of Commerce to consider how the change will affect tbe San Francisco service in relation to the Direct service.]
