AFTER HOURS.
ALLEGED BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT.
A prosecution for an alleged breach of the provisions of the Licensing Acb was heard ab tho Police Courb this morning before Dr. J. Giles, R.M. Mrs Jane Griffiths, licensee of the Carlton Club Hotel, was charged with having supplied liquor after hours to Robert Ridley "Holmes, James Wilson, James Impey, and Charles Scobb McDonald. All four charges were baken bogebher, the evidence being the same. " Irtspeobor Broham conducbed the case for the prosecution. Mr T. Cotter appoared for bhe defendanb, who pleaded nob guilby. Constable Risb deposed thab on the night in question he went to the hobel aboub five minubes to 11 o'clock. He waa admibted by defendants son. He enbered bhe sittingroom. The son called out " Mother," and a faint light in tbe bar was pot out. In tbe sitting-room he found James Wilson, James Impey, Robert Ridley Holmes, Charles Scobb McDonald, and bwo others whose names he did not know. The men were playing cards, and there were four glasses containingliquor on tho table. He heard corks drawn in the bar ten minutes or a quarter of an hour bofore he wenb inbo bhe hobel. Next morning Mrs Griffiths asked him to look over it, as she had supplied bhe liquor bo bhe men somebime before, and had retired, as she did not feel well, telling her son to turn the men out as soon as they had finished bheir game. By Mr Cobter: There was no delay in admitbing him bo the hotel. She said that bhe men played bhree games. James Impey deposed bhab he was in the hobel and had bhe beer a little before ten o'clock. He bad been playing l cards with Mr Clark, Mr Holmes and Mr Wilson. Wibness had only one glass of beer. There was a glass of beer on bhe bable when bhe constable entered the room. He did nob see any drink consumed or supplied after 10 o'clock. James Wilson gave similar evidence, and sbabed bhab he wenb home and was in bed before 11 o'clock. Roberb Ridley Holmes gave similar evidence bo bhe bwo previous wibnesses'. Hedid nob see Mr McDonald have any drink. Ib was 20 minubes bo 11 when the constable came. Charles Scott McDonald, nurseryman, Newmarket, deposed that he had a long beer at 8.30 o'clock, and none after thab hour. Drinks were supplied bo bhe obhers beforelO o'clock. Then the bar was closed. John Alexander Clark deposed he had Bhandygaff'ab 9.30 o'clock, bub none afber thab hour. • Dr. Giles said he would not call for any defence, but would dismiss the information.
