AUCKLAND ANNUAL REGATTA.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

The various prizes won ab -bhe Auckland Anniversary Regatta of the 29th ult. were presented to the successful competitors at a meeting of the Regatta Club in the Waitemata Hotel last evening. Mr A. H. Nathan presided and presented the prizes. There was a full attendance of the Regatta Committee and of persons interested in yachting and rowing. Before distributing the prizes the Chairman said that he was happy to announce that, owing to the liberal support of the Auckland public, the. Committee were able to pay all tho prizes in full, bub were only jusb able to do this, for they had nothing to spare. Their Anniversary Regatta was a success, but there was no doubt that the public and the Regatta Committee would have been better pleased had there been more competition in the various events. Then he thought that in the future more interest should be taken by the public in the election of a Regatta Committee. For a long time past they all knew that the succeeding Regatta Committees were mainly composed of the same men, year after year. They should have, he thought, in these nublic regattas, representatives not %*oly of the citizens, bub also ot the Yacht Crato and the rowing bodies, who would wor_s4jard to promote the success of Auckland's annual aquatic holiday. Something would have to be done to put the Regatta Club on a more satisfactory footing, and to better the present haphazard way of getting up regattas. Mr Nathan then proceeded to distribute the prizes. The £90 won by the Hauraki champion whaleboat crew was the firsb handed over, and then followed the prizes for the junior whaleboat race (Ponsonby), ships' gigs (Prospect), maiden whaleboats (Hauraki), scows (Dungarvon), cutters (Henry), first-class yachts (Arawa), second-class yachts (Mapu), second-class fishing-boats (Minnie), third-class yachts (Tangaroa), and open sailing-boats (Era). The winners were applauded as they received their prizes, especially the recipient of the first-class yacht prize, which consisted cf £25 and a very handsome cup presented by Messrs T. and S. Morrin and Co.

The Chairman announced thab there were two races for which prizes were not to bo distributed that evening, as they were bo be re-sailed —the second-class open sailing boats and the first-class fishing boats. They were to be sailed over agflin on Saturday nexb. Mr Garnaub, owner of the Clio, which was the only boat that sailed round the proper course in the large fishing-boat race, said he protested against this decision. He asked the Chairman why the race was to be re-sailed, seeing that he had complied with all the regulations and sailing rules of the Regatta Committee. The Chairman stated bhab the umpire in the sailing races had decided to have bhe race sailed over again, that the Committee had considered this fully and asked the umpire to re-consider his decision. He still adhered to it, however, and the proper course now wa« to re-sail the race. A cordial vote of thanks was, on the motion of Mr D. Ross, accorded tho Union S.S. Company for tho use of their steamer TeAnau as flags.iip» and also to Mr and Mrs Endeart for bh_ Use of the Waitemata Hotel for the Regatta meetings. On tho motion of Mr Ross, a vote of thnnks was passed to Mr C. C. Dacre, the Hon. Secretary of the Committee, for his indefatigable exertions and hard work in the interests of the annual Regatta. This was, he believed, the last occasion on which Mr Dacre would acb in bhe capacity of Secretary to the Committee, and the work would in the future fall on other ehoulders. The Chairman, in seconding the motion, said he was sorry that the Committee was nob in a position to present Mr Dacre with a testimonial in recognition of his efforts as Secretary for so many years past. Mr Dacre acknowledged the vote of thanks, and said that though he was not likely to again act as Secretary to the Committee, still he hoped that his work would be taken up by some new member of the Committee and the Regatta rendered as successful as in past years. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting. The Committee have just been able to pay all prizes and expenses, and no more. The prize money presented amounted to £252, and the expenses of the Regatta to £100. The total receipts were just about £350.
