DR. DALE'S VIEWS ON ESCHATOLOGY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,— Answering " Congregationalisms " inquiry of last evening, Dr. Dale is one of the advocates of life in Christ teaching. He says : " Eternal life, as I believe, is the inheritance of those who are in Christ. Those who are not in Him will die bhe second death, from which there will be no resurrection." Addressing the Congregational Union a few years since on this question, Dr. Dale said : " The reception of this doctrine has not only not enfeebled my belief in the great doctrines of the Evangelical faith, and especially in the doctrines of incarnation, the atonement and regeneration, but has given bo allthosedoctrin-satirmerholdon myintellect, my conscience, and my hearb." I give these quotations solely by way of proof of my opening statement, for assertion merely is valueless.

By way of cotamont, I should like to saythat any honest belief, fearlessly and lovingly held and taught, ia a thousand times preferable to the miserable negations held by ninety per cent, of the clergy. No wonder the people fall off from the Church when in the large majority of cases the pulpit's views are those depicted by Emerson's critic :— " They talk of things sometimes as if they ware dead; liife, nature, love, God, and affairs of that sort, They look at as merely ideas. They believed— taith, I'm puzzled—l think I * may call Their belief a believing ia nothing at all.

I hope the querist will forgive my comment. One is apt on questions of this sort to adopt the "Finally/brethren, by way of conclusion." "Peripatetic" writes on the self-complacency of the Church of England; he need not have limited it to that Church. The message given to the Laodaceim Church seems very applicable to all the churches just now. Trusting " Congregabionalist" will have more charity to Dr. Dale than a local church of thab denomination had for its pastor, —I remain, etc., Another Peripatetic.
