CITY COUNCIL

The ordinary meebing was held lasb evening. Present: Hia Worship tha Mayor, Mr J/H. Upton, ;\nd Councillors Gari-atfc, Warren, Xreuwith, Farrell, Holland, Dignan, Swailes, Weigh., Uv.-er, Lennox, Grey, Crowthcr, Hett'.on, L-Uersoa. Cr. Atkin sent word that he was unable to be present, aud was granted leave tor cue evening. Flax Storage.— The Secretary ot the insurance Companies' Association wrote acknowledging a communication irom Supb. Hugii.s regarding flax storage, and stated that as the matter was one of considerable importance, Capt. Field, of bhe Salvage Corps, is now engaged inspecbing the various premises on which flax material is stored.

Watek works Supplies.—On the recommendation of the Engineer, ivlessrs Morrin and Co.'s tender for waterworks supplies was accented.

Ponsonby Street Levels. —There having been no objection made to bhe levels of Baytield K.__.d and Bulwer-street, Ponsonby, they were fixed as shown on plans submitted.

Watek Supply.—Tivo communications were received under this heading. Mrs Jacobs wrote that hor water meter charges for the City Club Hotel were £14 14s per annum, in addition to £1 spent in cleansing a right-of-way. Sue asked for considerabion cf whab sho regarded as an excessive charge, and bhab she might be charged by meter. As this threatened to re-open a large question of meter charges, ib was referred to tli. Streets Comonitt.e to report generally. Mr J. Robertson wrote complaining of inadequate pressure in Lower Symon.-is-3t.eet, and this was also referred to bhe Committee, chiefly with a view to ascertain .he cost of remedying the defect.

HowE-S-iM'ET TK.EES.-7Mr C. Williamson wrote asking thab some trees in Howe-street in front ot Mr Campion's shop should be removed. Mr Goldie, Domain ranger, reported that all the trees in Howe-street required to be pruned, and it was agreed to refer the matter to the Streets Committee to inspect the trees and report. Edgec-MBE- Paddock.—Mr S. Meekan tendered an offer of ±.'SO per annum for lease of Edgecumbe's paddock, etc., for a term of five years. Mr Martin ottered £52 per annum lor a three years' lease of the same property. —It was agreed to refer the matter to the Finance Committee to roporb. Contract Dropped.—Mr M. Casey asked to be relieved from carrying ouo his contract for the supply ot lime, sand, and cement, as he had made a miscalculation in his estimates for cement. It was recognised that Mr Casey had tendered to supply cement at a loss, but a majority of the Councillors agreed that it would be a bad precedent to make any concession, and that the application should not be granted.

A Fence Wanted. —Mr J. M. Alexander wrote on behalf .of Mrs Crosby, of Symonds-street, asking for permission to continue the erection of a fence between her property and the property of Mr Wendell adjoining. Mrs Crosby complained that she had to raise the fence because her neighbour " made faces at her " and was otherwise annoying. The fence was eight feet high, and in contravention of the by-law.—Cr. Dignan said he had inspected the premises and was of opinion chat the requesc should not be granted. There was a 4ft 6in galvanised iron fence, until a quarrel arose between the parties, after which Mrs Crosby had the fence raised another nine feet.---Cr. Garrabt questioned whether the by-law was in accordance with the Fencing Acb, and. suggested reference to a Committee.—Cr. Hewson said he knew thab | Mr Wendell was at fault in this neighbourly Jj quarrel, and thought that if Mrs 9 Crosby *j wanted this fence raised to protect her from annoyance, the Council should grant it.— The matter was j referred to the Streets Committee to report.

Domain Lease.;— Mr W. Brakenrig applied for an extension of his present lease of property in Grafton Road.—Referred to the Legal Committee.

Chafing Horses.—Paterson and Co. asked permission to change horses in their 'buses in Lome-street and Coburg-street. This had been the pracbice hitherto, bub had been stopped by cue police. —Referred bo the Streets Committee to report.

Swanson-STREET. —Mr H. Phillips and others wrote, applying for channelling ol Swanson-street irom Queen sbreet tc Albert-street.—TheEngineer recommended that a new stone channel be made at a cost of about £40, and it was agreed that bhe work be done and charged to the ward account.

Slaughter-houses and Supervision. — The Legal Committee reported last evening on a letter from the Secretary of tho Trade? and Labour Council re inspection of Abattoirs, meat, etc., and recommended as follows :—Your Committee recommends a reply to be forwarded : (a) That the Committee is of opinion bhat the present eys[iem of slaughter-houses is preferable to one povernmentslaughter-house, bub to prevent .the community from danger strictest inspection should be provided and constant [supervision: (6) that every precaution should be taken against killing, heated Icattle; (c) that where an efficient Inspector is appointed, precaution would necessarily be taken to prevent the killing ol cattle within the city unless under proper supervision ; (d) thab within the city bhe I hours for driving cattle seem to meeb requirements; (c) the Council will ab all times give its support to any movement for the prevention of the sale of meat unlit for human food and to secure adequate supervision in all slaughter-houses.—This reeon.* mendation was adopted.

Lkgal Committee.--The Legal Committee recommended : (1) Letter from J. L. Holland, Hon. Secretary of the Hanging Committee, re ventilation ofthe Gallery, etc., that water-blast be erected to ventilate the Galierv. (2) That transfers on burgee roll be granted to P. F. Pureed, M. J. Regan aud Richard Hobbs. (3) Letter from the Secretary of the Harbour Board re rj.or.uary.—Your Committee reports having interviewed aCommittee of the Board, _nd thab a letter with a definite ofler from the Board will follow.—These recommendations were adoptod.

Grafton Ward.—The ward members reported : — (1) Motion by Cr. Pateison, 20th February, 1890, " That the drainpipe in Carlton Gore Road be continued irom Arawa-street to Grafton Road, and i! -tiee along Grafton Road to Kyber Pass Road." We have the honour to report that after mature deliberation wo are of opinion that this work should be carried out. (2) Petition! from ratepayers, Boston Road (Cr. Hewson), re formation.—We recommend that the Engineer be instructed to communicate with the Gaol authorities, asking them to contribute towards the formation the necessary metal and refuse for filling, as we are of opinion thab the heaviest traffic on the road is from tbe Gaol by metal carts.— The report was adopted, bhe cosb estimated at £90 to be charged to th 6 Ward allocation.

Public Urinals. — Cr. Garratt moved, " Thab the Engineer be instructed to report this nighb fortnight as to the suitability of sites for three public urinals, viz., corner of Pitt and Beresford-streets, Symonds-street, opposite Karangahape Road (portion of the Cemetery ground if practicable), and portion of tha waterworks reserve at the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Roads. Engineer to include in his report estimated cost of same, using tha material now on band. —This was agreed to.
