AN ABANDONED BARQUE.
THE STRUAN FOR MELBOURNE-
The Norwegian barque Struan, bound from Puget Sound, lumber-laden for Melbourne, lately, was abandoned waterlogged at sea a short) time out. The crew was rescued by the British barque T. N. Marshall, and taken to San Francisco.
The men had suffered much hardship, but none were lost, and one only, John Howge, third mate, was injured during their thrilling experiences. The Struan left Port Discovery bound for Melbourne with lumber on November 24th. Stormy weather was encountered almost immediately after getting outside, and soon the vessel sprang a leak. In spite ot all that could be done, the pumps became clogged and the vessel filled and became waterlogged and unmanageable on December 3rd. From lack of water the men suffered intensely. When ib rained a little water was caught, and relieved their thirst somewhat. All the rigging possible and the mainmast were cob away to ease the vessel. During the gale Thomas Jorgeneen, second mate, was washed into the eea, but the captain succeeded in rescuing him. Captain Skogland calculates the Sbruan was in about W N., 13* M., when abandoned.
