POLICE COURT.—THIS DAY.

Justices.) Drunkenness. — For this offence Robert Leary was fined 10s and costs, and Elizabeth Besb 5s and costs, with the usual alternatives of imprisonment. Alleged Larceny.— Robert Kurtz, on remand, was charged with larceny as a bailee of the sum of £5, the property of Edward Aitkens at Melbourne, on November 4th, 1890. He was further remanded till the 12th inst., as the warrant has not arrived from Melbourne yeb. The amount of bail was enlarged. Case Withdrawn. — Francis Arthur Watson was charged that on the 9th December, 1890, he did unlawfully, by false pretences, obta'n a gold watch and chain, valued at £26 10s, and one diamond and sapphire bangle, value £36, the property of H. Kohn, with intent to cheat and defraud. —Mr S. Hesketh appeared for the prosecution, and Mr W. J. Napier for ; the defendant. — Mr Napier said the defendanb had explained the matter ; satisfactorily to the prosecutor and the : case would not be proceeded with. It api peared thab the accused had an account at ona of the banks, and was not aware : that the cheques tendered for the articles ! purchased would not be honoured. The money was about to be paid for the cheques, which would be duly honoured when again presented. —Mr Hesketh agreed to this course and the charge was accordingly withdrawn.

Obscene Language.—Ellen Lawson, alias Moller, was charged with using obscene language within the hearing of persons passing in Albert-street, on the 30th ult., and was sentenced to four hours' imprisonment. Alleged Assault.—Lizzie Corney was charged that she did, on the 2nd February last, unlawfully assault and beat Clara Chatfield, by striking her on the head with an umbrella. Mr Theo. Cooper appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Napier for the defendant. By mutual consent the case was withdrawn.
