THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES.
THE LATEST PHASE. (BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER. ) Wellington, tins day. The Chairmanship of Committees is still the chief subject of discussion in tho lobbies. Since yesterday's division various rumours have been rife. It i 3 said that the Government will not force on Mr W. C. Smith's nomination, that they will allow the matter to be deferred, that ifc will be shelved altogether for this session, and Mr Hamlin's friends say his chances of success are very good. Government supporters are very restive in the matter, and the longer its decision is delayed tho more they dislike to have to vote for Mr Smith. The Governmant appear to have made a distinct mistake in tactics in the nomination. No other candidate can now be proposed, but an amendment can be moved to the present motion in favour of Mr Smith to tho effect that the Chairman of the Standing Committees take the duties, and that no Chairman be appointed. The most probable course now is that he will be dropped, and nobody appointed this session.
