MR THOMPSON'S CANDIDATURE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Last night T said |bubl was informed that a private circular had been sent round by the Orange 'Lodge in favour of Mr Thompson. This morning I have received and seen copies of the note. Ib is not from the Orange Lodge, nor from it? officers. lr. is simply a private letter from Mr D. GoJdie recommending the electors to vote for Mr Thompson, as by hie knowledge Mr Thompson was a fib person to receive one of the three votes in the disposal of each elector. I take this opportunity of stating the fact, and thus of correcting any false impression which might have been raised by my statement. I am pleased to be able to make this public explanation in time.—Yours, etc., W. L. Bees. The note referred to .by Mr Rees in the foregoing letter is as follows:—"Auckland, November 29th, 1890. " Dear Sir,—On Friday next the election of members for the city will take place. You will then have the right to vote for three of tho seven gentlemen now seeking your suffrages. One of those, Mr Thos. Thompson, 1 have worked with for years, both in the Borough Council and in the House of Assembly. From my experience of him in both places I-have no hesitation in recommending you to vote for him in the coming election. — Yours truly, D. GOLBIE."

(To the Editor.)

gl K) —ln hie address last evening Mr Rees said he "had been informed tliac a secret manifesto had been issued by the Orange Society in favour of Mr Thompson." There has been nothing of tho kind. At a, meeting of the mem tiers of the Orange .Society It was resolved that in view of the coming elections all minor questions" upon which differences of opinion might exist should be waived — thnfc certain broad principles should bo affirmed —that upon tho recognition of and promise to uphold these principles by any candidate should depend the votee of the members of tho order; thab a circular containing a series of questions embodying fcho principles referred to should be forwarded to each cUy and suburban candidate; that as soon ac practicable after nomination day tho candidates' names, with their replies to the circular, ehould be submitted to a general meeting and that the candidates then selected by the majority should have a block vote of all the members. Tho result of the proceeding of the meeting next dftv appeared in the Stab and

•'Herald." The circulars were forwardod in due course, and all except three were returned with the questions answered. The day after nomination a general meeting was held, the names of all the candidates submitted, and a ballot taken. The results at once appeared and still appe.irin your advertising columns. Oilier than the above no manifesto eithor public or secret baa been issued by the Society. Mr Keeshad supportere at the meeting, but tho majority wore against him. Some of these considered liim to be in bad company and others recalled the loss of hard-earned money invested in tho Co-operative Land and Labour Company, of which ho was promoter.—l am, etc., War. Thoknk, H.G.S., L.O.L.
