POLLING DAY.

Mr R, J. Duncan, Secretary of tho Central Liberal Committee, wrote to His Worship the Mayor yesterday requesting him to proclaim a, public halfholiday on the day of polling for the election of members to the House of Representatives on Friday next. He points out that this course haa frequently been taken in some of the Southern constituencies in former years, where the number of electors roached4,oooors,ooQ. In reply Mr Upfcon has written to Mr Duncan as follows: —" Dear sir, — In reply to your letter of this data requesting me to proclaim & public half-holiday on polling day, I have to say that I think all arrangements respecting the general election, aflecting as they do the colony as a whole, should be made by the Government. I am not able, therefore, to comply with your request."
