(ON niS RETIKE3IEXT FKOM PUBLIC LIFE.) Brave patriot chief! a song to lliee, Who rain would sec the rule of Kight, Zmiamlia's o'ortaxed settles free Js'roru dull Oppression's might. May Health sustain thy failing powers Yfit i breathing from the woods and fields. And wealth of corn and fruits and ftdwera W Inch rich Pomona yields*. Well hast thou foceci, with courage strong, The foes and errors oi the time. Ami may kind Heaven thy (lays prolong. In this most favoured clime, To sneak thy thoughts concise and clear, Fraught with the eioquonce of truth: To warm lorn heart 3 with words sincere, And warn and counsel youth. Boojvs thou hast given for leisure hours, "With knowledge stored and views refined, To move men's intellectual powers, And aid the growth of mind. "With learning, taste, and manners bland, The common weal thy cherished aim; Within the senate thou didst stand, But not for laurelled fame. TJio looming cloud thy mind foresaw While yet among arcadian trees, And Freedom's song and Duty's law Were mere than lettered case. 'Twas thine to light the sons of toil. Along the stfadowy paths of life, And sof Lea wirh Hope's genial smile The throes of Labour's strife. And may'sfc thou see with joyous eyes The passing of the robber band, And thriving people, sober, wise. Located on tho land. Msiy Peaco attend thy waning years And health's sweet roses cheer thy way, Long ere Zcalandia, steeped in tears, Shall mourn her statesman, Grey; John Elacxmas, November, 1830.
