The New Zealand hemp market is unsettled owing to forced sales. Quotations nominal; medium is worth £24 10s per ton ; Manilla market easier. f The London frozen mutton market is quiet, and the price of mutton has declined fd per lb. There ia a rather bebter demand for tallow. Quotations unchanged since lasb telegram.
Ab the request of Mr Parnell, Sir C. Gavan Duffy will contest Kilkenny North, rendered vacant owing fco the death of Mr E. P. Mulhallen Marum, who was returned at last election withuut opposition. The Registrar of Electors at Wellington is instituting proceedings against several persons claiming a right to have their names placed upon the electoral roll, on the charge of making false declarations. ! The amount of Baring Brothers' guarantee in London will be £17,000,000 without) assistance from private and country banks. The Baring Brothers will reform in to a limited company with a capital of over a million, which is chiefly provided by members of the family.
The New York branch of the Irish National Land League have decided thab the accounts be produced showing how the sum of £2,000,000, remitted to Ireland from America since 18P6, has been disposed of. The League also denounces the present mission of Messrs Dillon and O'Brien. ■ A meeting of the Public Service Association of Wellington will be hold on Friday week, afa which the rules and regulations, joased on the suggestions which have been received from all parts of the colony during tho last) two months, will be submitted. I A sample of coal recently discovered ab Catlin's has been forwarded to Professor Black, of Dunedin, for analysis. A trial has been made of other samples with good results, showing it to be good gas coal. It also leaves a residuum of clinkers, showing it to be true coal, the first) of its kind found in Otago. In the same locality ironstone and lime exist, but to what extent is nob yet known. Do nob be "a penny wise and a pound foolish," bub ask for and buy Brown, Barretb and Co.'a genuine pepper.
