ATHLETIC SPORTS.

SATURDAY'S MEETING,

The Amateur Athletic Club had every reason to be satisfied with the sports' meeting held on Saturday last. The weather wae fine, the attendance was large, and the. sports wore run off exactly to time, so that there waa no unnecessary delay between the events. Twenty-seven races wero run off between half-past ono and five o'clock, and nob a hitch occurred. The Caking 3at the gates we're greater than at tha last March meeting. The crowd must have numbered eloae on 5,000. Hia Worship fche Mayor was present during the afternoon, and a number of other prominent citizens patronised the sports. Tho Key. Mr Bawfcrey was unable to give his exhibition of the game of ringoal, as tho crowd rushed the ground immediately after tho conclusion of the lasts race. Mile Bicycle.—Ten started for this event, Waters being the only man scratched. Short fell in the firsb lap. The distance suited Hoffmann nicely, and hs won with a bit to spare, from tho 50yds mark ; with Hammond, 80yds, 2 ; and Reynolds, 80yda, 3. Time, 3min 10 3-ss<3c. 120 Yaeds Hanmcap. — Firsb beat: Every man started, and a splendid race ended Whiteside (6yde), 1; Lundon (11yds), 2. Owen camo well from scratch, bub could not get up. Time, 12 l-sth ccc. Second heat: Again all started. Madigan *as expected to win this, but Chetfield (12yds) got first, Laird (liyds) second, and Madigan third in 12sec. The ten placed men started, and a very hard race was run. Laird and Hutchison came up on tho men, bub could not get past, and a close finish resulted : Chatfield 1, Barnea 2, Hales 3. Time, 11 3-sth sec. Mile Walk—Only Selby and Seccombe wero absent, leaving the big field of 13 to starb. O'Dowd, 90yds, soon took the load from Burns, 100 yds, but Peace, the scratch man, was walking splendidly, and in the third lap passed everybody and won aa he liktjil, with Creamer 15yds, second. Groker, 65yds, jusb beat O'Do'wd for third place. Time, 7min l^sec. Half-Mile.—A very largo Sold started. Myers (50yde) second, and Short (30yds) third. Time, 2min 1 3-sth sec. Two Mile Bicycle Race.—Buchanan waa too late for this and did not start. Hoffmann and tihorfc kept tog-ei'her mosb of the way, and afc half-way were leading. Shorb (ISOyde) rode with great judgmeub, and in the spurt home beat Hdftinann (80yds) easily, with Reynolds (140 yards) third. Howard gob up close. Time, 6min 55sec. Quartkji Mile Hordlm.—Owen was de'eiaedly tho hmi jumper in this race, bub he seemed to lack coudition and fell at the last hurdle. The balf-inile race had knocked Simpson up, and ho baulked ab the fifth hurdle. Martin (20 yards) ran strongly right through and won pretty easily, with CJpfill (SO yards) second, and Nixon (35 yards) third. Time, 65sec. lakies' Bkacelkt, 250 yards. MiLiji Run.—-Nine men faced the music for the mile. Lynch made full use of hie 120yda starb, but Clarke (25yds) was running strongly and in a good position. In the third lap Winks from scratch began to bury his men, but he could only get third, Clarke winning easily from Lynch. Time, 4inin 42^360. Theek Milk Bicycle Race. — Lecky, Stewart and Waters failed to starb. Aickin with 320 yds led for a time; but Hoffmann, Short and Reynolds soon got away in front and kept pretty well together to the last lap, when Short came away in good style and won. His start was 230 yds. Reynolds, 220yds,was second,and Hoffman, 180 yds, third. Time, 9min 46 2-5 sec. Howard gave up, bub Buchanan kept ab ib and gob sixth.

Steeplechase.—This was over a pretty stiff course of about two miles. Davis (45Bec start) ran with great judgment and pluck, wiraning in the straight. Lynch (60sec) got second, but he was disqualified for taking a wrong course, and Clarke (lOsec) was given the place. Nixon (35seo) was the only other man to finish. The time was lOmin 18 3-sth sec-

This was a fine race, and was especially notable for Hutchison's plucky run from scratch into second place, being beaten by Hill by three yards only, in 51 l-sth sec, with Christie third. Five Mile Bicycle Race.—This was about the bssb race of the day for spectators. Thesbarters were :—H. S. 5h0r»,360 yards, 1; E. Reynold?, ZoOyards, 2; A. Cγ. Buchanan, scratch, 3. The other competitors were: J. G. Lecky, 200 yards; T. M. Hammond, 250 yarda; J. Selby, 300 yards: and N. Aickin, 400 yards. Shorb and Reynolds were soon left sailing in front of them all, with Hammond close and Buchanan riding a desperate race in pursuit.
