November 28—Otago Cup December 26—Auckland Cud
No one having come forth to join Major George in his offer to purchase Sylvia Park at the figure of £17,000, thefiDal ultimatum for the nale of the stud has gone forth. The sale is fixed for Saturday, 3rd January, when the wholo of tho thoroughbreds will be pub under the hammer. Ib has been decided to offer the mares with foals at foot first, and then follow with the stallions and yearliiigs. Tho sale will, no doubu, attract many commissions from Australia, and we may anticipate some sensational prices for the gems of the stud. Already 2,000 guineashavebeenoffered privately for Mersey (Carbine's dam) and her magnificent colb ioal by Nordenfeldt. The following foalingS are reported from Sylvia Park this week: —Altantis (dam of Leolantis), colt to Ingomar; Crinoline (dam of Clogs), colli to Nordenfeidfc; Lyre (late Lyric), colt to Ingoman Mr Cutts has decided to mate tho Musket mare Happy Land with Neleon. There have been one or two inquiries from the Soiith asking Crackshot's price for the Auckland Cup, but I have not heard of any lines being written on the race straight-out. Books have been dpened on the Cup and Steeplechase, and backers are accepting 20 to 1 aboub picking the double. The weights aro not due till Friday, sfch December. The first racing meeting of the season in connection with the Takapuna Jockey Club takes place next Saturday. Tho weights are due on Monday and acceptances on Wednesday. It appears thab Mr B. Thompson s Torment badly struck ono of her leg 3 while running in the Hurdlo Race on the second day of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting, ami she Has not been out of her box since. Ml" Thompson proposes mating her with St. Leger, if arrangements can be made. A rumour has been cast abroad that Mr U. Burke backed Carbine in the Melbourne Cup for a sufficient sum to cover his liabilities over his own horse. I have the best authority for stating there is not a tinge of truth in the rumour, for if there was any horse in tho race Mr Burke was confideat of Cuirassier beating, ib was Carbine. Aqualate, tho filly by July from 'Teredo vthat) performed so indifferently at the recent Christchurch Metropolitan Meeting, has been "purchased by Mr Stead, and Egalite, another cast-off from the E. Cutts stable, by Mr Uooseman, the well-known Napier trainer. The Dunedin Jockey Club have been poorly rewarded for subsidising the Otago Cup with the splendid stake of SOOsovs, for only half-a-dozen have paid up. The race is run nexfe Friday, and whoever beats Occident should win. Kotuku, the sister to Scots Grey that ran so ingloriouely in the Now Zealand Cup, was stinted by Ariel before leaving Napier. Carbine's total winninga in stakes now amount) to tho unparalleled—for Australia— total of 25,47350v5, inclusive of sweopstakee and the Melbourne Cup trophy.
