DRAUGHT ITEMS. A Lady Champion.

Our champions (say 3 fche " Leeds Mercury Supplement") will have fco look to their laurels. A lady has entered fche draughts arena who bids fair to come prominently fco bhe front;, and in thess days of lady senior wranglers, lady doctors, lady lawyers, etc., ib would b9 nobhing surprising fco hear of a champion lady draughts player. In connection wifch this the " West Lothian Courier" has fche following :— "Miss Lydia Parlour, of East Cowfcon, has, among ofchers, , attained a considerable amount of local celebrity a3 an adepb at bhe game, having defeated many of the local experts. Her friends being desirous of testing her skill againsc a player of more than local repute, arranged a friendly match between her and Mr N. Macara, which was duly played ab Dalton in fche presence of a somewhat numerous company. Afc fche end of four hours' play, the score was—Miss Parlour two wins, Mr Macara two wins, one game being drawn. Ib was then agreed to give Miss Parlour the honour of playing the first fcwo games ever played on the"silver draughts-board, 'The South Durham and North Yorkshire Trophy.' Ot these Miss Parlour scored one and Mr Macara the obher, making fche contesb a draw. Miss Parlour's favourite openings are bhe c Kelso ' and the 'Cross.' She does nob profsss any knowledge of book play, and relies albogebher on her ability for success. Should she bake up tho serious study of the game, there is no doubb she would become a fine player. More power to her." The following is the score ot one of tho games referred to : — "The Cross." Black, Mr Macara ; white, Miss Parlour. 11-15 15- 6 IS- 9' 10- 7 23-13 2- 9 13- o 3-10 8-11 19-15 8-15 11- 7 27 23 27-31 6- 2 32-28 U-16(a) 24-19 15-19 7-14 18-11 31-27 2- 7 28-24 16 20 15-10 19-240). 14-10 24-19 9-14 7-11 24-19 7-1& 18- 9 24 27 18-14 22-18 5-14 2117 20-16 4- 8 19-15 27-31 14- 9 1845(f)) 14-18 17-13 16-11 10-14 30-26 31-27 10-14 26-22(c) 13-25 13-9 11-7 14-18 29-22 27-24 , 9-13 23-14 23-30 9- 6 19-lb 9-18 32-23 24-20 14-17 ■ 31-26 3P-25 6-2 1-6 16-23 22-17 (f) 12-16 17-14 26-19 25-22 2- 6 6-10 18-23 17-13 16-19 14-17 22-18 22-26 6-9 7-2 20-24 23-18 19-24 13- 9 25-22 26-22 9-14 15-18 24-27 Id) 18-14 24-28 17-13 ■ 28-24 (c) 22-18 14-18 10-15 6-10 15-11 23-32 And Mr Macara wins. NOTES. (From the '• Bishop Auckland Chronicle.") (a) This move forms the " Slip Cross," a weak move for black. (b) A weak move which should losa the game. 25-22 is the proper move. (c) White has now a very bad position. (d) This move should lose bhe game for black ; 6-10 is bhe correct move. (c) White throws away bhe win by 19-16, 12-19, 15-10, 6-15, 18 4, etc. Whibe wins. (/) The game is now over ; white is struggling against hope. (g) Why not 1-6, and simplify matters ?
