FATAL ACCIDENT.
BOY KILLED IN A COAL MINE-
Westpost, this day. A i.Ad named Duncan was crushed bo death ab Denniston to-day. He was getting coal, when an immense stone fell on top of him, crushing his lega and the lower parb of his body. Death ensued in a few minutes.
Bishop Cowie conducted a confirmation service ab All Saints' Church lasb evening. There was a full congregation, and thirtythree young persons of both sexes were confirmed. His Lordship delivered an appropriate address to the young people, pointing out tho responsibilities devolving on all thab named tho namo of Christ, and then administered the rite of Communion. The incumbent (Rev. W. Calder) and tho Rev. Dr. Purchas wero also presenb.
Messrs Edwin Harrow, Robert Mackay, and William. Henry Shakespear, having been this day nominated as candidates to represent the Takapuna Riding in the Waitemata County Council, and ono member only being required, Mr Seaman, as Returning Officer, announced that a poll will bo taken on Wednesday, November 12th, at the old Lake schoolroom, and ab the residence of Mr Giles, on the Devonporb Road.
Miss Amy Vaughan's Amazon Concert Company, which has been growing in popularity week by week since they opened ab the City Hall, have prepared a complete change of programme for bo-nghb. New items will be introduced both in the chair business and also in the second part, forming what should be a very attractive entertainment.
Mr J. D. Pope lectured last night at the Academy of Music on "Robert Emmet, tho Irish Patriot," bub the weather was unfavourable, and the audience consequently was far from numerous. Despite this drawback, the lecturer persevered with his task, sketching the character and tragic incidents of Emmet's brief life, and reciting the main portion of his celebrated speech from the dock. He also contributed two songs, "The Dear Little Shamrock" and "The Land for the Free," and recited the spirited poem " Who Fears to Speak of ! 98."
Mr Giles, of tho Educational Chambers, Durham-stro6t East, guarantees good writing to ladies and gentlemen in one course of lessons, and receives pupils privately or in class. He also teaches by correspondence. Inspection of numerous testimonials is invited.
