NEW TARIFF BILL.
A WONDERFUL SCENE
Nkw Yokk, October G.
The new tariff came into force to-day. There was a tremendous endeavour to rush through as much business as possible before midnight. The American merchants ran special trams to the Canadian frontier, and steamers and tugs were run to hasten the foreign deliveries. There was immense excitement at the Customs over the incoming steamers. There was a frantic rush with the Etruria's papers and manifests, which were lodged just half a minute before midnight, thus escaping the new tariff by thirty seconds. The journals in every European capital denounce the new tariff.
