GALE AT THE THAMES.
(by telegraph.— own correspondent.)
Thames, this day. One of the heaviest gales that have visited these shores passed over the Thames lasfa evening and continued until 6 o'clock this morning, when heavy rain set in. About 4 p.m. yesterday Captain Cameron, of the schooner Maud Graham, had a narrow escape from drowning, owing to the boat ia which he was coming down, the river capsizing. He was, however, rescued by Messrs Rolton and Cross. About 8 o'clock last evening Captain Sullivan, of the steamer Te Aroha, reported that a young man named Richard Garretfc, mate of the Te Aroha, had been blown to sea. It appears Garrett had lost his hat and took one of the dingies to recover it, but was unable to return to the wharf. Search parties are out. The steamer Te Aroha, which has been cruising about since 2 o'clock thin morning, returned at 12.15, but no trace of Garrett) had been found, and there seems little doubt he haa met) with a watery grave.
