Replying totheoflerof thclabourorganisations to provide rive hundred men as special constables, the Government declined, expressing V!aeir regret at the recent action of some of the strikers in maltreating their feliows for merely pursuing their lawful calling, desputo tho assurance they had given tio maintain a peaceable attitude. Tho barricading of the principal Newcastle wharves is now completed. The treasurers of the various Unions ,r.c,te that unless a settlement is effected TVithin a week the whole of the labour organisations will be directed to withdraw their fund* from the various banks, and place them in the Bank to be established by the Labour Defence Committee. The "Sydney Moininpr Herald," commenting on Saturday's meeting, ?aya the strikers have failed to show that tho principles of Trade Unionism are any way imperilled. Any intention of attack on tbom is emphatically repudiated by the owners.
