Orowaiti having left ,f the service, the officers are doing the trima mers'work. Everything is quieb. Aboub _ 100 men are on bhe wharf, but none are a offering their services." p A later message states: "A meeting ir was held early this morning to take steps x to form a Labourers' Union, and to see if they might affiliate wibh the Lumpers' n Society. A number of speakers urged all it labourers to join in the proposed scheme, , c and it was agreed to call an early meeting - 0 in bhe Public Hall, when further informa--11 tion would be given." id The officers and cooks, etc., are still on in duty on the Orowaiti, and are doing work l( j usually done by firemen, trimmers and Is seamen; but, if non-Union lumpers are en- }. gaged, it is expected they will refuse to jf help unload the coal. Very high wages j, havo been offered, but there is no response.
