SPURLING'S FLAX REPORT. , Thk followingis Mr C. Spurling's report of "the. Lon.nn market for New Zealand flax, dated July'f-th the East Week the stagnant statelbf bvtr market! for New Ze'alaUd hemp— r.ferled to in my last ndvices of the 11th nit.— life* Wen further/intensified, dridVtoEicfcsgenerally liavalbown a declining tendency on<tbe quotatioiisM that date.: During: the past ten days, howefer an improved demand for good med?J_ti. and fully fair sorts, has been es-
ponenced, and tho downward tendency of such has been arrested. On the other hand low half-drossed, as also common and low medium qualities, show little or no improvement, and 10 eitect salesof those descriptions holders havo still to accept rather lower prices. For the moment there is but little demand for really fine, which is still held ior full rales, whilst good, to good and fine, are only saleable at from £20 to £21 10s. -Arrivals of New Zealand since 11thult. have been very small, comprising the following:— Murreuhridge, Seriol Wyn, Nor-wester, Tonganro. Duko ot Buckingham, Andes, and Arawa, with a total of only 723 bales hemp. Supplies at auction during the month comprise 6,039 bales hemp and 135 bales tow. Of these 4,200 bales hemp at and after sales have found buyers, the tow being withdrawn without biddings, Recont advices that some of the mills lately closed are again re-opening has rather surprised buyers, showing that even at present low rates there is likely to be a full supply of Now Zealand in the near future. This has tended to depress our market: this with the declining values of Sisal and Mauritius hemps, induces great caution on tho part of operators in New Zealand hemp. As sonic set oft' against this, however, it is satisfactory to point to the recent improvement in Manila hemp, which if maintained may tend to prevent any further important decline in the values of New Zealand. As indicating tho renewal of important business with America, sales are reported as having been made by some of the Manila houses of from 18,000 to 20,000 bales hemp, whilst some 30.000 to 40.000 bales of Sisal, at ££5 to £25 10s,a'ro believed to have been concluded betwoon the Yucatan growers and the American syndicate of ropemakers. Annoxed are particulars of landings, deliveries, and stocks of New Zealand hemp, for tho month ending Zl\\\ June, 1890:— Landed. 1,788 tons: delivered, 252 tons; stock, 4,108 tons.
