(Before Dr. Giles, R.M.) Dbunkenness.—Tnree first offenders were , } each fined sa, or in default 24 hours' hard ~ < labour. Elizabeth Lacy, alias Lynch, w ; as fined 20s and costs, or 48 hours' hard' labour, for haying been drunk yesterday. ' Obscene Language.—Barbara Craigia pleaded guilty to having need obscene lan* -; guage yesterday in High-street, and wae '-~'■■ sentenced to sev6n days'imprisonment with , ■* hard labour. , r l Probation Granted. — Elizabeth Bates, '-'", appeared on remand on account'■ of having. .V stolen.one pair of boots from in front of the shop of Mr W. H. Dampier on the 31et of July.—Mr F. Baume appeared for the defendant, and stated that the accused had been remanded, pending the report of the Probation Officer.—Mr Reston handed in hie report, which was a favourable one.— v> Dr. Giles said he was glad to find that the report of the Probation Officer was in uni ° • formity with the statement of witnesses called as to character. He had, therefore, no hesitation in placing her upon probation for four months.
Alleged Indecent Assault. — John Strathem appeared on remand on the charge of having on the 25th of July at , ■''. Mounb Eden indecently assaulted Ellen Hunter.—lnspector Broham said that since hie return to Auckland he had investigated ■ ', this matter, and without wishing to express any opinion on the merits of the case, still ■ he must say that he considered that it) ,■ should be gone oa with.—Dr. Giles said that he had suggested the adjournment because he thought in the face of the letter produced previously it was only right that further enquiry should be made. Of course, if there was any reason to think that the withdrawal wa» not bona tide, it was right that the case should be investigated.—lnspector Broham - said he would express no opinion about the merits of the case, but he thought it should ■ '. be investigated.—Dr.. Giles then adjourned ; the hearing until next Tuesday. . {
