AN AUSTRALIAN IN ENGLAND.
,Mr Alfred Joseph, the Victorian penciller, sends to a Melbourne paper his impressions of the Epsom Derby and other turf notions. Ho says:—-"The Derby is bruly a wonderful sight, although we had bad luck with the weather, and ib never coasod raining all day. What a crowd of Australians were present ! When the horses came oub for their preliminary, Kirkham looked much better than when I saw him run ab Newmarket, but he went very short and sore. During my short sojourn here the way the favourites have been defeated is truly amazing, and the ring men have had a real good innings. And they do beb in England. Wo hb.ve one good punter in Australia, who'will pop it on if he knows anything. There are ab least a thousand of his class hero, and they think nothing of ib. 1 saw a punter lay 5,000,t0 500 on in a bob, and ho won his ' monkey.' I also saw 100 to 0 laid on Shillelagh 10 times, and another punter laid 1,200 to 100 on five times, and was beaten by a 100 to 4 chance. Considering over half a million were presenb ab bhe Derby, and nearly all web to fche skin, by the papers I aaw thab only 52 were locked up. Bub the London police are so genclo, kind, and obliging, that thoy are respected. The way they manage crowds and traffic is truly marvellous. Bub, after Australian racecourses, there is no pleasure for ua ab a race meeting here, and many of us now refrain from going out."
