THE "POST" ON THE HUTCHISON

COMMITTEE,

The "Posts," referring to the appointment of the Committee of Investigation re Hutchieon charges, says : " Without saying a wovd against the eight other gentlemen, we think that Mr Withy'e position will not be exactly a sinecure, but he is a fair-minded man of business, and coming from Auckland he may be regarded as leaning towards the Bank ; but against this we have the fact thab he is not an Aucklander of any long duration. We accept Mr Withy unreservedly. Before the Committee.gets into the throes of an investigation that promises to be acrid, we willonly add an expression of regreb that the House has lost a good opportunity. Why nob have remitted this matter to two judges of the Supreme Court ?" The petition of H. Rogers and others for ro-opening Whangapoua for gold-mining, has been referred to the Goldfields Committee. The petition of Anne Schnackenberg for a repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act has been declared informal. To the remonstrative telegram anent the waste of time caused by the discussion on the condition of the colony, Dr. Fitchett and Mr Fish reply to Dunedin to-day aa follows: — " Thanks for telegram. The general hope expressed here is that th~e more intelligenb body of citizens in Dunedin do not concur with you in pronouncing to be a waste of time a discussion by Parliament upon the constitution of the colony and its financial and industrial outlook. We would suggest that your influence might be powerfully employed for the public good in petitioning Parliament for dissolution at the close of the Financial debate."
