FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS' BILL IN QUEENSLAND.
f A deputation from the Shop Assistants' Early Closing Association of Brisbane ? waited on the Colonial Secretary lasb week for the purpose of urging certain amendxnents in the Factories and Workshops Bill introduced in the Assembly, especially in the direction of the compulsory closing of shops at a certain hour on Saturday nights. A long discussion took place. Mr Macrossan said that the Bill provided that females and males under a ~f c e»bain age should nob work more than 48 hours in a week. Limits to a certain ex«tent were also put upon the times ab which ,-fQrk should be.done. In the Bill, Saturij day;nighb closing was practically left an open question. The principle acted upon was that children and females should be but. male assistants over 18 should be able to protect themselves. Both the Government and himself were, .bpweverj open to consider any amendments proposed* and personally he had a bias in iavour of early closing on Saturday nights, Ibut Was afraid that the working men had 'mob, Eventually it was decided that the views df the Association on the Bill be forwarded in writing to Mr Macrossan. '
