MR GEORGE C. MILN.

The announcement appearing in our advertising columns of tho appearance of Mr George C. Miln at the Opera' House on Monday evening will doubtless be received with genuine pleasure by bhe theatre-goers of this city, and the following brief sketch of his career will be read with interest :— Mr Miln was born in London in 1851, where the early parb of his youth was spent. Having received a preparatory course of training at the famous Blue Coat School, he crossed the Ablanbicab bhe age of 15, and in due course entered and graduated ab bhe Princeton' Univeraiby. Being ihbended for bhe Church,, be .devobed! some eighb or nine years of his early manhood bo bhe pulpib, in which he won a high reputation as a broad-minded preacher of thoextremeliberal type, and was universally noted for his eloquence. Mr Miln'a opinions on religious matters then underwent a change, and he became convinced thab his ideas were too radical on cerbain theological points bo justify him in rebaining his position, and he voluntarily, and in the face of many protests, resigned his priestly office. His withdrawal from the ministry occasioned wide-felb regret, / and his adoption of the calling of a Shaks-' perian actor was the cause of great curiosity and surprise. Mr Miln's first appearance ou bhe stage took place in, the Grand Opera House, Chicago, whexe he played •* Hamlet," a characber since impersonated nearly 900 times. Adhering closely to the classical drama, this great arbisb has in eighb years placed his name in the front rank of the living exponents of Shakspere, and succeeding in maintaining the reputation he enjoyed in the ministry, he is regarded wibh respect as a man, and admiration as an acbor of great versatility and power. Tho opening production in Auckland will be one of Shakßpere's mosb popular tragedies, Hamlet, and we understand bhe scenery and accessories will be on a scale seldom before equalled in New Zealand. The box plan will be opened ab Mr Wildman's bo-morrow, when a brisk demand for reserved seats is anticipated. .:..; '
