An old man, 6_ years of age, named Edward Riley, of Waterloo Quadrant, was run over the other evening by a cab-drivor driving at a furious rate in Wellesley-streefc East, and rather badly hurt, his foot and shoulder being much injured. Mr Glenny, who has been for the last eight and a half years head-master of the Northcote school, is leaving thab district this week for Waipipi and is being parted with by the Northcote residents with great regret. His pupils have presented him with a number of valuable books as a bouvenir, and on Sunday evening last the parishioners of St. John's Anglican Church presented him wibh a valedicbory address and a pur.'o of sovereigns. This afternoon tho first of the new liferafbs construcbed by the firm of Dunn, Smibh, Drummond and Co., for the* Northern Steamship Company, was subjected to a practical buoyancy test inthe waters of the harbour at the entrance to the Auckland Dock. The test, which waß witnessed by a large number of intoresbed spectators, was a very satisfactory and successful one; and the raft is evidently one that should be carried on every passenger vessel. Each rafb will afford support to thirty people in emergencies.
