POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.

Drunkenness.—Five first offenders were each fined ss, or in defaulb 24 hours' hard labour. Alleged Assault.—William Barbley was charged with having assaulted James Bevege on bhe lsb of July.—Mr W. J. Napier appeared on behalf of the defendant and stated thab tha case had been settled.—Mr C. E. Madden was present on behalf of the complainant and confirmed the statement, and the case was accordingly withdrawn. Chimney on Fire. —HughSuffellpleaded guilty to having allowed the chimney of his house in Ponsonby Road to take fire, and was fined 5s and costs. Supporting His Mother.—Alexander Chine was called to answer to the charge of failing to provide adequate support for his mobher. A lebter was received from defendant offering to pay 5s per week and enclosing £1. An order was made accordingly.
